Frequently Asked Questions
Why run an employee engagement survey?
- The success of your organisation depends on the competence and motivation of your employees. Do you know what your employees think of their jobs, or your organisation? Are there things you can do to make your organisation a better place to work, and elicit a better response from your people? If your organisation has a focus on improving productivity, you need to work with your employees to create an organisational environment that will get the best out of them. Our research on NZ's largest database of employee attitude and opinion indicates there is a strong link between employee enagagement and improved customer service, productivity, and profitability. What resources do you have for helping me put together a business case for running an engagement survey?
- Our 2008 publication Employee Engagement: From Insight to Action is designed to help you better understanding the mechanics behind our engagement survey instrument, and also draw the line between employee feedback, organisational improvement, and bottom-line profitability. This publication will help you put together your compelling proposition.
- As a bonus, the second half of this publication looks at the post-survey process - what is 'best practice' once the survey is over? We discuss 4 different approaches that organisations of different sizes and structures could consider to help them formulate a post-survey plan.
- Employee Engagement: From Insight to Action is available for free download, or if you would like us to provide you with a hard copy, please use our contact form to make your request (please include full postal details).

"Why bother? We're not going to win"
- The unlimited/JRA Best Places to Work in New Zealand Survey is not just about finding New Zealand's Best Workplaces - it's also about the desire to become a great place to work. The large majority of organisations that take part in the survey - many of whom participate annually - do not participate because they think they might win an Award. They participate simply because having a great workplace is a worthy goal, and an excellent way of attracting and retaining talent. Satisfied employees are more loyal, committed, and perform to higher levels.
- Your results and ranking are NOT made public if your organisation does not make the finalist list. If you are a finalist, permission will be sought to make public selected data.
"It's not possible for an organisation in our industry to win"
- There is no stereotype of the sort of organisation that can be a finalist in the unlimited/JRA Best Places to Work in New Zealand Survey. In 2007, winning organisations came from retail, manufacturing, distribution, insurance, IT, education, local government, advertising, and pharmaceuticals - see our Hall of Fame for the full list of the 2007 finalists.
- The reason why organisations from any industry can do well in this survey is that
employees complete the survey based on their own expectations and experience. Employees know what is possible for their organisation to provide within the constrains of their industry and specific job role, and (more often than not) they know what similar organisations/roles offer. Click here to download an article from Human Resources magazine that further demonstrates how it is possible for organisations in ANY industry to become a "Best Place to Work."
"We already run our own survey/a global survey"
- If you already run a survey in your workplace, it is definately worth looking at the unlimited/JRA Best Places to Work in New Zealand Survey. How long does it take you to create a questionnaire, distribute hard copies, complete data entry from completed questionnaires, and then create graphs/charts/reports? And what is that time worth? We can take all of the hassle of running a survey away from you, from just $695+gst, leaving you with the time and inclination to act on the survey results.
- If you are already part of a multinational, you may already survey your staff. A large number of organisations that participate annually in the unlimited/JRA Best Places to Work in New Zealand Survey conduct global surveys within their company, but participate in our survey to gain better local reporting, access to New Zealand benchmark data, and the chance to be recognised as one of the Best Places to Work in New Zealand.

What questions are included in the survey?

This allows us to compare organisations as places to work, as rated by their employees. This also means we can offer organisations that participate in the survey the option to benchmark their results directly against all other organisations who participate.
